The Importance Of Working WITH Someone On Your Fitness Journey
We all have different reasons for wanting to get in shape. Some of us want to lose weight, some of us want to look better, some of us want to avoid getting tired walking up the steps. Whatever your reason for wanting to start a fitness routine, make sure that you understand this very important fact.
Your success depends on others.
Whether you realize it or not as human beings we are social creatures that rely on helping each other through difficulties and sharing in good times. It’s something that is ingrained in us.
Even those of us who go to the gym solo and prep our own food. It requires acceptance and support from our friends and significant others. Even something as small as asking someone for a spot at the gym, or the gym owner taking on the risk to open up a place for you to get in shape leads to your benefit, your fitness depends on other people.
At the same time, other people’s fitness depends on you. You must work to make the mental transition from realizing that this is not an individual game, to this is a team game, and you’ve got to be a good teammate.
- A good teammate is someone who is happy for others successes and supports them.
- A good teammate is someone who understands that it is not about their individual success, but it’s about the teams success.
What good is scoring 100 points if your team loses? This idea can be applied to fitness very easily. Getting in shape for yourself will only carry you so far. You must become a part of something greater than yourself. Your mission can not be for you. There must be a greater purpose.
How about developing friendships at your gym and taking new members under your wing? What about documenting your transformation to help inspire others? What if you were to transform yourself, become a fitness coach, and train others who are currently experiencing the negative feelings you are?
What do the above purposes have in common?
They have nothing to do with you and have everything to do with adding to someone else’s life.
So I challenge you to do some reflecting and be honest with yourself by answering the following questions.
Why do you want to get in shape?
How can you adjust your motivation so that it includes helping others?
After all, what makes the world a better place, you losing 10 pounds, or you helping 10 other people lose 10 pounds???
