Why Some Reach Their Fitness Goals And Others Don't
Today I want to talk to you about something I think you should know.
It's called "The Chase"
We spend so much time striving to accomplish our goals without ever really taking a step back and giving ourselves perspective. It's human nature to do this.
We want to look a certain way or lose a certain amount of weight. We become fixated. It's all we think about and it consumes us.
We try every diet known to man, every workout tape out there,
tracked our weight, and join countless gyms all with the hope that it will be the magic bullet.
We are chasing a finish line.
We are chasing something that isn't real because let's say you do accomplish that goal. Then what?
If you've been reading my emails for quite some time, chances are you've heard me talk about the idea of the "infinite game."
The only purpose of an infinite game is to keep playing.
Some examples include marriage, parenthood, and living.
The goal for these things is to keep doing them because you never reach a point where you "win" marriage or "win" parenthood and living.
"Winning" is just continuing to be a part of it.
This is the rule that applies to fitness.
The goal should be to continue playing. Keep working out, keep hydrating, keep fueling your body with nourishing food.
If you put all of your energy into doing these things, something funny happens.
All of those goals you previously had.
Lose 20 pounds.
Lose belly fat.
Run a 5k.
They just happen as byproducts.
You don't have to chase them. They come to you.
So next time you find yourself fixating on the number on the scale or fitting into those pants you used to love, try switching up your thought process and focus on the habits.
Not chasing the goal.
Take some time and reflect on the following questions.
1) What frustrates me the most about getting in shape?
2) Why does the above answer frustrate me so much?
3) What things could I focus on as part of my fitness journey to help me get rid of these feelings of frustration?
