Are You A Plus, Minus, or Equal In Your Gym?
Think about the first time you set foot in your gym.
Were you nervous at all?
Unsure about what to expect?
Confused about what a TEMPO Training is?
Even though you were scared and weary of what you should be doing, you persevered.
And if you're anything like me, one of the main reasons you were able to persevere is because you had a "gym mentor."
Somebody who took you under their wing. They made it a point to say hi whenever they saw you and intentionally got to know you before or after class. They probably also helped you though a handful of workouts you were struggling with.
This is one of the things that makes fitness beautiful. It challenges you on so many levels that it requires teamwork in all sorts of combinations.
A great example of this is Frank Shamrock and his coaching methodology.
For those of you who don't know who Frank Shamrock is, he is one of the best MMA fighters of all time who retired as four-time defending undefeated Middleweight (later renamed Light Heavyweight) champion of the UFC.
As is the case with many successful athletes, Shamrock went on to become a coach and mentor to up and coming fighters where he put his "Plus, Minus, Equal" methodology into place.
This methodology makes sure that all of his fighters get as well rounded of an experience as possible.
"Plus" refers to a fighter who has better skills. This gives the other fighter something to aspire to.
"Minus" refers to a fighter who has less skills. This gives the other fighter someone to mentor and teach.
"Equal" refers to a fighter on the same level. This gives the other fighter someone to compete with every step of the way. A friendly rival of sorts.
Now I'm sure you can pick out a plus, minus, and equal of yours at your gym, but let me ask you this.
Have you ever considered putting effort toward being someone else's plus, minus, and equal?
As someone's plus, you actively seek out someone else who is less experienced than you and you help them along the way. Not only does this help the other person, but it helps you tremendously because teaching helps to reinforce and expand on what you already know.
As someone's minus, you actively ask them for advice and strategies on how you can improve your fitness. This helps the other person for the reasons mentioned above and helps you remain a student actively seeking to learn more.
As someone's equal, you help to push each other in a friendly way. Feel like giving up on those burpees? Your equal won't let you.
All 3 of these are extremely important when it comes to fitness because they prevent plateaus and help keep you immersed in the Infinite Game of fitness where there is no finish line.
So I challenge you to think about the following questions.
Who is my fitness "plus"?
Who can I be a fitness "plus" to?
How can I be a better fitness "plus" to this person?
Who is my fitness "minus"?
Who can I be a fitness "minus" to?
How can I be a better fitness "minus" to this person?
Who is my fitness "equal"?
Who can I be a fitness "equal" to?
How can I be a better fitness "equal" to this person?
The answers might surprise you.
