Do You Think You Are Patient Enough To Get In Shape?
Do you think you can learn anything from a video game?
I bet you can.
You see, I used to play this video game called "Overwatch".
To make a long story short, it's a game where a bunch of fun different characters (one is a gorilla) run around trying to kill each other (in as cute a way as possible).
Anyways, one of the characters in this game is named Zenyatta.
He is a a Buddhist Robot Monk that throws orbs at his enemies and as silly as that sounds, he actually has some really great voice lines in the game that are much deeper than his cartoonish appearance.
One of my favorite lines of his goes something like this, "A warrior's greatest weapon is patience."
Very fitting considering he is a Buddhist monk named Zenyatta.
This line always stuck with me because it is one of those nuggets of wisdom that can apply to anything in life.
Especially fitness.
You see, when most of us begin our fitness journey we have this idea of how things are going to go in our head.
Usually we think we are going to start seeing results after a week of working out.
We don't understand why we don't have sexy abs after 5 workouts.
I mean c'mon, you burned like 400 calories in each of them, that's got to count for something right?
And when that doesn't work, we go on a strict diet.
FINALLY, we're losing weight.
Who cares if we're only eating celery and carrots for all 3 meals. We are gonna look GOOD.
But inevitably, what we knew all along comes to light. We can't sustain the celery and carrot diet and we end up going full force to the other end of the spectrum and taking part in the cake and ice cream diet.
And our progress, again, goes out the window.
We get flustered.
We want to give up.
And a lot of times we do because,
It must not be in the cards.
Besides, we have so much going on. It's not "realistic" to focus on our health at the moment right?
Sound familiar?
But what if I told you that getting your hopes up, crash dieting, and getting frustrated are all parts of getting in shape that every single person goes through?
What if I told you the only difference between you and that coworker who's getting amazing results is PATIENCE.
They kept pressing on even when their results didn't match up with the idea they had in their head.
They stayed the course when they didn't lose weight for weeks at a time.
Instead of getting frustrated they trusted the process and were patient.
That is one of the secrets to getting in truly great shape.
Not being reactive to every little thing that happens or doesn't happen to you.
AKA being patient.
So just remember, fitness is an infinite game. It doesn't end until you die. And hopefully that's a long time.
So why not settle in for the ride and get used to these internal battles.
Because you are a warrior, a fitness warrior.
And just like Zenyatta said,
Your greatest weapon is patience.
